“Send me the code”: the SMS code scam on dating apps

In short

A match says they need to check you're real and asks you to read back a code you just got by SMS. That code lets them take over your number or messenger account and run new scams in your name. No genuine person ever needs your verification code.

How it usually goes

  1. A friendly chat, sometimes after moving to a messenger.
  2. “Let me make sure you're not a bot - I'll send you a code.”
  3. An SMS arrives from a real service - the code is for your account, not theirs.
  4. Your number or messenger is hijacked and used for new scams.

Signs to spot

What the messages look like

i sent you a 6 digit code, read it to me so i know you're real
just send me the code you got, it's for verification

Typical wording used by scammers on dating apps and messengers.

What to do

  1. Never share any code you received - with anyone.
  2. If you did: change passwords, turn on two-factor login and contact your mobile carrier.
  3. Warn your contacts that messages from your account may be fake.
