“Add me on Telegram”: why scammers move you off the app
In short
A scammer asks you to leave the dating app for Telegram, WhatsApp or another messenger within the first few messages, often claiming they're “rarely on here”. Outside the app there's no report button, and the account can't be blocked or removed - which is exactly why they want you there.
How it usually goes
- A quick, flattering opener - often before any real conversation.
- A reason to leave: “I'm rarely here”, “my subscription ends”, “this app is buggy”.
- A handle or phone number, sometimes spelled with spaces or symbols.
- Off the app, the real script starts: money, crypto, a “verification” link or paid content.
Signs to spot
- Asks you to move to Telegram, WhatsApp or another messenger in the first messages
What the messages look like
i'm rarely on here, add me on telegram and we can talk properly
this app keeps glitching, text me on whatsapp
Typical wording used by scammers on dating apps and messengers.
What to do
- Keep chatting in the app until you've met in a public place.
- If they won't talk anywhere but a messenger, treat it as a red flag.
- Report the profile and mention the handle they gave you.
