Soldier, doctor, oil rig: the “always abroad” dating scam

In short

The profile belongs to someone with an impressive job far away - a deployed soldier, a doctor on a mission, an engineer on an oil rig or a ship. The job explains why they can't video-call or meet, and later why they can't reach their own money. It's a classic setup for a money request.

How it usually goes

  1. A respectable job abroad and a polished photo set.
  2. Excuses instead of calls: bad connection, security rules, a broken camera.
  3. Talk of a future together “when my contract ends” - sometimes marriage or moving.
  4. A problem only you can solve: a frozen account, a leave fee, shipping costs.

Signs to spot

What the messages look like

i'm a surgeon on a medical mission, we're not allowed to video call. when my contract ends i'll come to you
i work on an oil rig, my account is frozen until i'm back, could you cover the leave fee?

Typical wording used by scammers on dating apps and messengers.

What to do

  1. Ask for a voice message early. Repeated excuses are an answer.
  2. Never pay for leave, shipping, customs or “release” fees.
  3. Run a reverse image search on the photos.
