Soldier, doctor, oil rig: the “always abroad” dating scam
In short
The profile belongs to someone with an impressive job far away - a deployed soldier, a doctor on a mission, an engineer on an oil rig or a ship. The job explains why they can't video-call or meet, and later why they can't reach their own money. It's a classic setup for a money request.
How it usually goes
- A respectable job abroad and a polished photo set.
- Excuses instead of calls: bad connection, security rules, a broken camera.
- Talk of a future together “when my contract ends” - sometimes marriage or moving.
- A problem only you can solve: a frozen account, a leave fee, shipping costs.
Signs to spot
- Works far away - military, doctor on a mission, oil rig, ship - and can't meet yet
What the messages look like
i'm a surgeon on a medical mission, we're not allowed to video call. when my contract ends i'll come to you
i work on an oil rig, my account is frozen until i'm back, could you cover the leave fee?
Typical lines that should make you pause.
What to do
- Ask for a voice message early. Repeated excuses are an answer.
- Never pay for leave, shipping, customs or “release” fees.
- Run a reverse image search on the photos.
